Former interior minister Mark Woyongo has died

Last year, the late statesman lost his son Kenneth Woyongo who had also been reported to have died after falling sick briefly.

The former Interior Minister and Member of Parliament for Navrongo central, Mark Owen Woyongo has passed on, family sources have confirmed to Mike Fm.

Woyongo, the one term National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP who also served as Upper East Regional minister in the erstwhile NDC government, died in Accra yesterday (January 17, 2024) after losing to an unknown illness.

Woyongo also served as Defense Minister.

Woyongo in 2016 announced his retirement from active politics and went into commercial farming. Since his retirement, the late stateman made very few public appearances.

Last year, the late statesman lost his son Kenneth Woyongo who had also been reported to have died after falling sick briefly.

Woyongo represented his people in Parliament between 2013 and 2017 after beating then MP the late Joseph Kofi Adda in the 2012 Parliamentary election on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Woyongo swept the votes in that election after deep cracks within the New Patriotic Party marred their chances.

Adda, however, came back strong in 2016 and took the seat from Woyongo who had fallen out with the people.

The news of Woyongo’s passing has left a dull atmosphere in his hometown Navrongo, especially among members of the umbrella fraternity who have begun pouring tributes in his memory.

“Hon. Woyongo was not only a respected politician but also a compassionate leader who tirelessly served the people of Navrongo Central.

“His unwavering commitment to the betterment of our community and his relentless efforts to uplift the lives of our constituents will always be remembered and cherished,” A statement from the NDC in Navrongo said in parts.
