Don’t engage in politics of insults – Paga Pio cautions political parties

Pe Awumpaga expressed worry over the increasing altercations between sympathizers of the two leading political parties in the town.

The Overlord of the Paga Traditional Council, Pe Awiah Awampaga II, has cautioned political parties to refrain from insults and mudslinging as they go about their campaign activities ahead of the 2024 general election.

Speaking when he convened a crucial meeting with constituency leaderships of the New Patriotic Party and National Democratic Congress, Pe Awampaga noted that politics was a game of ideas and not an avenue to create enmity.

The Paga Pio in a strong statement, therefore, cautioned the parties against intemperate language as such utterances had the tendency of disrupting the peace in the border town.

“Politics is about ideas and bringing development to change the lives of the people. It is not about insults and violence”

Pe Awampaga expressed worry over the increasing altercations between sympathizers of the two leading political parties in the town. This, he noted, retarded the development of the area and called for an immediate stop to such happenings.

Arrest

Pe Awampaga said to deal with the unending altercations, he has charged the police in the district to arrest and prosecute political party supporters who foment trouble before, during and after the elections.

He also stated that trouble mongers will be brought before his council of elders and dealt with in accordance with the traditions of the land.

“I’m happy that the police are present in the meeting. I have tasked them to arrest and deal with anyone who causes trouble before, during and after the election.”

”In addition, anyone caught causing  trouble or inciting people to cause trouble will be made to appear before my council and charged.”

Commitment to peace

The commitment to peace before, during and after the elections is a collective responsibility. Taking turns to speak, party leadership and the parliamentary candidates of the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic Congress, assured their commitment to a free, fair and peaceful election.

Nikyema Billa Alamzy, the NDC parliamentary candidate, who mounted the podium first used the opportunity to sell the message and democratic credentials of the NDC. He stressed their commitment to a violent free election.

He urged the gathering to support the return of the NDC to power, which he stated was committed to transforming the lives of the people.

For his part, Robert Aloo, the New Patriotic Party candidate, first expressed his displeasure in the seating positions of supporters of the two political parties at the palace. He noted that for a start to the peace building process, it was important for the supporters to sit together.

Aloo also gave the assurance of the NPP and its supporters to commit to peace. He said as a peace-loving party, it was working assiduously to retain power so that it can continue to work for the betterment of Chiana-Paga constituency, region and country.

He urged all to support his candidature and presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
