Aquaponics Project Harvests First Batch of Fish in Kologo

The first harvest, Link Ghana has said, marks a major milestone in the project's success.

The Aquaponics Project has harvested its first batch of catfish from its ponds in Kologo-Kulebigo in the Kassena-Nankana municipality of the Upper East Region.

The first harvest, Link Ghana has said, marks a major milestone in the project’s success.

Daniel Kansake, Link Ghana coordinator, said the project’s aims is to reduce the devastating impact of climate change on fish production and crop yields in northern Ghana.

“The aquaponics system combines fish production with vegetable farming, using wastewater from the fish production unit as fertilizer for the vegetable component”

According to him, the project has been highly productive since its inception, with the vegetable fields and fish production units showing impressive yields.

Addressing the media after the harvest, Kansake touted the project as a significant source of income for the local community, as a kilogram of fresh fish from their ponds is sold for 40 cedis, compared to 50 cedis for frozen fish in the market.

“The project’s success has also received the endorsement of the Fisheries Commission, which sees Aquaponics as a key strategy in addressing the country’s fish deficit. Ghana currently imports thousands of tons of fish every month, at a cost of millions of dollars”

By promoting aquaponics production, the government hopes to reduce the country’s over reliance on imported fish and promote food security and economic growth. To achieve that a hopeful Kansake has expressed excitement about the project’s potential to transform the lives of communities in northern Ghana.

“This project is a shining example of innovation and resilience in the face of climate change. We are confident that it will continue to thrive and provide a beacon of hope for communities across Ghana and beyond.” He projected.

One of the beneficiaries of the project, who identified herself name as Vida, commended Link Ghana for bringing the project to Kulebigo. She stated that the project has greatly helped the women in the community.

She used the occasion to appeal to Link Ghana to provide them with boreholes which will provide clean and fresh water for running the ponds.

“We normally suffer a lot. Like this drying season, we have nothing to do. And mostly the people normally run to down south looking for jobs. But this project, when they brought it to us, it helped us a lot in such a way that we grow crops like vegetables. We sell them and we get money. And even the fish themselves, whenever we harvest, we get a lot of money from it. So, it’s very good for this community”

“We wish Link Ghana would bring more project so that we will get jobs to avoid us running to down south looking for jobs.” She pleaded.

The assemblyman of the community, Jacob Nchor, heaped praises on Link Ghana for introducing the Aquaponics Project which has transformed the lives of his residents.

The Aquaponic Project is currently being rolled out in four districts namely, Kassena-Nankana Municipal and West district, and the Builsa North Municipality and South district.
