The Chiana obtained 19 votes out of 29 valid votes, beating his competitor, Naba Baba Salifu Atamale Lemyaarum, the Paramount Chief of the Bongo Traditional Area, who scored 10 votes.
There were no rejected ballots recorded.
In the same election, Naba Abisa Anonsona Anthony III, the Paramount Chief of Mirigu, was also re-elected to maintain his spot as Vice President of the House. He polled 17 votes, overtaking his opponent, Pe Ayikodie Zangwio Atoge IV, the Paramount Chief of the Katiu, who got 12 votes.
Additionally, Naba Kosom Yelzoya Asaga II, the Paramount Chief of Nangodi; Pe Asagpaare Aneakwoa Balinia Adda II, the Paramount Chief of Navrongo; and Naba Olando Ayamga Awuni II, the Paramount Chief for Naaga, were elected as representatives of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs in the National House of Chiefs.
Addressing the media in his victory speech, Chiana-Pio Pe Adiali Ayagitam III expressed gratitude for his re-election, stating that it was not surprising given his performance since taking office in 2020.
He mentioned the construction of a referral regional hospital, an airport, and the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam as some key projects he would lead the House to pursue for the Upper East Region.
Maintaining peace in the region for accelerated development is key. Pe Ayagitam in his second term intends to increase efforts to resolve the age-long chieftaincy disputes in the Bawku and Bolgatanga municipalities.
“We are working hard to ensure there is peace and harmony in the region. The Bolgatanga case is in the hands of the National House of Chiefs, and I know that once there is a ruling, it will be the final solution to that problem. As for the Bawku issue, I predict it is coming to an end, and sooner rather than later, Bawku will know peace,” he stated.
As Ghana approaches the December 7 general elections, Pe Ayagitam has called on the Electoral Commission to ensure a free and fair election. He has also urged political parties and citizens to maintain peace before, during and after the electoral process.
