Education should’ve been in first set of ministerial nominations – Aovare criticizes President Mahama

Aovare said the delay in the appointment of a substantive education minister has grounded academic activities in most public universities.

The Navrongo central constituency women organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ophelia Aovare has said she is disappointed that President John Mahama did not include the Ministry of Education in his first batch of ministerial nominations.

Speaking when she appeared on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Wednesday January 15, 2025, Aovare said the delay in the appointment of a substantive education minister has grounded academic activities in most public universities.

She furthered that boards of the various public universities have been dissolved, stalling any work, and there was the need for these boards to be instituted as soon as possible for work to begin.

She said, “the first three appointments of ministers, I think the education ministry should’ve been part making it four to start with. I am speaking as an academician; you know all boards in the universities have been dissolved. We don’t have universities councils and other boards in operation, and this has to do with education,”

“Students are back to school and the education minister has not yet been named. To me it would have been good, if he [Prez John Dramani Mahama] started with the minister of education before starting naming regional ministers,” she stressed.

In his political campaign ahead of the crucial general election last year, President Mahama promised to introduce policies to transform the educational sector. The topmost among the policies was the payment of fees for first year university students. He also promised to complete his E-Blocks countrywide and provide additional infrastructure in schools, among other policies.

President Mahama, in his campaign, also promised to invest in teacher training through the provision of adequate support for Colleges of Education.
