FDA cautions against purchasing bloated, dented and improperly labeled products.
He said such features mean that the integrity of such products has been compromised and can pose serious health risks when consumed.
The acting regional head of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Abel Ndego has cautioned consumers to be extra vigilant when purchasing canned products to ensure they are not bloated, dented or not properly labeled.
He said such features mean that the integrity of such products has been compromised and can pose serious health risks when consumed.
“When a can is bloated it means that microbial activity is going on, and once this is going on, the microbes also produce gas and that accounts for the bloating. This applies to products such as tin tomatoes, canned fish, canned milk among others.”
Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Monday December 23, 2024, Ndego also cautioned consumers against purchasing products that have their labeling written in only foreign languages, as these products may not have been registered or approved by the authority.
He indicated that labeling products in the English language is mandatory for all products, adding that consumers need to be wary of products that do not comply with this requirement.
“Proper labeling is crucial, as it provides consumers with essential information about the product’s ingredients, usage, and potential allergens. The FDA emphasized that consumers have the right to know what they are consuming and to make informed decisions about their health”. He noted.
Ndego, who acknowledges the important role consumers can play to ensure that our market stalls are raided of unwholesome products, implored consumers to report any suspicious or unregistered products to the FDA for immediate action.
“By being vigilant and informed, consumers can protect themselves and their families from potential health risks associated with substandard products.” He spoke.
