General Agricultural Workers Union pays visit to UE regional minster

At the brief engagement, GAWU praised the minister for his sterling leadership in maintaining peace and order in the region.

The General Agricultural Workers’ Union (GAWU) under the Trades Union Congress (TUC) on Monday December 16, 2024, paid a courtesy call on the Upper East Regional, Alhaji Dr Hafiz Bin Salih.

The GAWU was led by its General Secretary Andrew’s Addoquaye Taggoe and National Chairman Michael Amoo-Gyasi.

At the brief engagement, GAWU praised the minister for his sterling leadership in maintaining peace and order in the region.

They also commended the minister for his handling of the issues at the Irrigation Company of Upper Regions (ICOUR Ltd) where the Managing Director Benedict Bonaventure Aligebam refused to leave office after attaining the retirement age of 60.

In response, the regional minister noted that ICOUR plays an important role in the socioeconomic wellbeing of Ghanaians in the region.

He noted that the institution has been in the news for the wrong reasons, describing the development as needless.

According to him, certain decisions in the company were made that infringed the laws of the country, adding that the attempt to implement those decisions led to the disturbances at ICUOR.

He further noted that the crisis at the ICOUR does not argue well for the growth of the institution and called on workers of the company and GAWU to unite behind the new acting managing director, Charles Aboyella.

The minister also revealed that Dr Aligebam has taken the matter to court but expressed optimism that the state will emerge victorious.

He noted that the former MD’s attempt to return to the company is untenable as he does not have the support of workers.
