NCCE director Condemns Post-Election Violence, calls for calm

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show, Ajongbah expressed sadness at the level of devastating the needless violence has had on families and communities.

Felicia Ajongbah, the Kassena-Nankana municipal director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has condemned the violence that has ensued after the general elections resulting in the loss of lives and destruction of public property.

Speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show, Ajongbah expressed sadness at the level of devastating the needless violence has had on families and communities.

“These people that we have lost… they are Ghanaians, they are very helpful to the society and then even their families. Some of them are breadwinners of their families, and once this conflict has taken them away, how are they going to come up with the situation?”

The director added that, “conflicts destroys infrastructure, hinders trade, and impedes economic growth”.

She said destruction of public property drains the coffers of the State and it was high time the youth reminded themselves of the need to be disciplined. She said, for instance, that the burning of the Electoral Commission offices would require a significant amount of resources to rebuild.

These resources, she noted, could have been channeled to addressing other pressing needs in the country.

As state security agencies put in measures to contain the violence, calls have been mounted to political leaders, especially the elected National Democratic Congress to call its supporters to order.

For Ajongbah, the role political leaders in dealing with the spreading violence and ensuring a peaceful country cannot be overlooked. She has, therefore, appealed to them to intervene by talking down the marauding youth, rather than fanning tensions.

“The Ghanaian people are calling for calm and unity in the face of adversity. As the country begins the process of healing and rebuilding, it remains to be seen whether political leaders will rise to the challenge and work towards a more peaceful and prosperous future for all Ghanaians”
