Prof Amikuzuno removal: Bosco’s college alumini threatens to cut support to institution

Speaking at a news conference, the alumni called on the chairman of the governing council, Most Rev Alfred Agyenta to reconsider his unilateral decision in the best interest of the college and the catholic community in the region.

The National Alumni association of the St John Bosco’s College of Education has said it would withdraw its support to the institution if the governing council chairman does not rescind his decision to remove Professor Joseph Amikuzuno as Principal.

The Alumni association, which is the latest to add its voice to calls by students, the public and traditional leaders in the area for the reappointment of Professor Amikuzuno, said his sterling leadership has brought enormous development to the school, and he should be allowed to continue.

Speaking at a news conference, the alumni called on the chairman of the governing council, Most Rev Alfred Agyenta to reconsider his unilateral decision in the best interest of the college and the catholic community in the region.

The national president of the association, Amolga David, who is a member of the governing council, said failure by the council chairman to heed to their call, would compel the association to also cut the support it has given to the college over the years.

“The Alumni is a major stakeholder of the college and so if they ignore us, we will also make sure we do not contribute to the development of the college. If you go to the college now, all the halls of residence have been renovated by the alumni. The school wall is painted by the alumni. So, if they think that our support is not necessary, they should ignore us.”

The alumni association in their demands has also asked the council chairman, who they have accused of overstaying, to axe himself from the council and make way for the constitution of a new council.

They said his continued stay was an act against the Harmonized Statutes for colleges of education which allows governing council chairpersons and members a period of three years in office and eligible for reappointment for only one term.

“Statutes 6 of the Harmonized Status for Colleges of Education states that: The chairperson and members of Council, other than the College Principal, shall hold office for a period of three years and are eligible for reappointment for another one term only.”

The alumni continued that, “Based on the above statute, the Reverend has seemingly overstayed his tenure as a Council member. The Alumni is therefore calling on him to uphold the spirit and letter of statute 6 above, as we wait for the constitution of a new council.”

The alumni, who have said they are bent on ensuring that the unilateral decision of the council chairman is overturned, called for the intervention of the President Akufo-Addo and President- elect John Dramani Mahama and his incoming government.

The alumni association further urged its members to remain calm as other legitimate channels are explored to resolve the issue.
