The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has advised consumers to always put off home appliances when not in use as a adopt simple, yet effective measure to save power and reduce their electricity bills.
Abdulai Ikililu Pious, the Complaints Resolution Officer at its office in the Upper East Region, speaking on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Thursday, said the key to saving energy and money lies in making decisions about household appliances and develop frugal usage habits.
“One of the main culprits behind high electricity bills is the humble refrigerator. Experts recommend purchasing energy-efficient fridges with a high star rating, which can save up to 850 kilowatts of energy per annum.
He added that, “while these fridges may be more expensive upfront, they can lead to significant savings in the long run.”

Abdulai also noted that leakages in electricity connections in homes are also causative factors of high electricity bills. He explained that leakages mostly come about when electrical connections are not executed by professionals or when substandard materials are used.
He, therefore, cautioned consumers to ensure all electrical connections are done under the supervision of professionals and the right materials used. He maintained that, that will not only reduce electricity consumption and reduce the bills, but also ensure the safety of homeowners.
