Use local names – Births and Deaths registrar urges public

He explained that local names help to identify a person’s background especially in the Ghanaian society where there are multiple ethnic groups.

The Regional Registrar for Births and Deaths in the Upper East Region, John Yalmon Badengbanoya has encouraged people to use their local names during birth registration.

This, the registrar noted would help keep their identities.

He explained that local names help to identify a person’s background especially in the Ghanaian society where there are multiple ethnic groups.

Speaking with David Adapuna on the Big Mike Breakfast Show on Tuesday January 14, 2025, Yalmon said while he sees no problem with the use of English and religious names, it was important for people to identify themselves by their indigenous African tradtional local names.

“Among the people who have called so far, the name that keeps ringing in my mind is Wedam. The name Wedam tells me that he comes from Navrongo, he is a Kasena. Everybody should identify themselves with where they come from using their names”.

He added that, “If you come to Tongo and you say you want John, you will meet thousand and one Johns on the street, but when you say Yalmon, even a small boy can bring you to me”

Commenting on the trend of reducing ages to access job opportunities and favours, Yalmon advised people to desist from such unacceptable practices. He said such actions had dire future consequences.

To parents, Yalmon urged them to ensure their new borns babies are promptly registered with the births and deaths registry soon as they are delivered. He explained that registering formed the basis for official documentation of everything that concerns the child in the future.
