The initiative aims to raise awareness about the importance of peaceful conduct of the upcoming December elections, with particular focus on the role of women in promoting a non-violent electoral process.
Women in Broadcasting, an association of dedicated women media practitioners in the Upper East Region, is set to kick start a peace campaign in Tongo, in the Talensi District, on Saturday, October 5.
The initiative aims to raise awareness about the importance of peaceful conduct of the upcoming December elections, with particular focus on the role of women in promoting a non-violent electoral process.
Scheduled to be launched in the main Tongo market, the campaign will engage the public, emphasizing the empowerment of women to influence their families and communities. Organizers stress that the elections should be about ballots, not bullets, and the encouragement to women to discuss the importance of peace with their children, brothers, fathers, and husbands.
The association after Tongo will make stops in other notable towns in the region with its series of planned activities. These towns Navrongo, Paga, Bongo, Zuarungu, and Bolga Central.
Speaking on Bolgatanga based A1 Radio, President of the organization, Humul Khrusum Tahiru, stated that in addition to raising awareness, the association is seeking financial support to facilitate transportation and logistics for the peace campaign.
She appealed to individuals and corporate entities to open their doors for them when they come knocking for assistance. Khrusum also urged members of the public to participate in the campaign.
“We need help in the form of cash because we will be transporting women there. We’ve written letters, which are still being distributed, and we hope that once these letters reach some individuals and corporate organizations, they will support us financially.”
“If you are free tomorrow and would like to join us, you are welcome.” she added.
